On 14 August, Representative Dr. Mustafa Ramazan welcomed Mrs. Shireen Aqrawi of the Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF) in the KRG Representation office in Vienna to discuss the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Iraq. In the meeting Dr. Ramazan outlined the Representation’s strategy for gaining public support and receiving humanitarian assistance and donations from the Austrian and local Kurdish communities to contribute to the international effort of aiding the more than 1.5 million refugees in the Kurdistan Region.
Mrs. Aqrawi briefed the Representative about the current projects of the Barzani Charity Foundation, which are providing for the needs of tens of thousands of people who sought refuge in the Kurdistan Region. In their efforts, the foundation is cooperating closely with the Kurdistan Regional Government as well as international organizations such as the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).
“Due to its local knowledge and experience the Barzani Charity Foundation is perceived by the many international relief organizations as the most effective responder of the humanitarian crisis currently unfolding in the Kurdistan Region”, says Shireen Aqrawi.
The Barzani Charity Foundation operates a refugee camp north of Erbil and contributes in a leading capacity at many more sites spread across the Region. In cooperation with the WFP the foundation also runs six communal food kitchens that serve two hot meals to about 150,000 refugees daily. In the last weeks the BCF distributed basic humanitarian supplies to the refugees in Erbil, Sulaimani and Dohuk and played an integral part in supplying the thousands of Yezidis stranded on Mount Sinjar at the beginning of August with water and food through emergency airlifts.
