Extension of UN Mission mandate in Iraq

The UN Security Council unanimously voted in favour of extending the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) until May 2022.

UNSC Resolution 2576 has been approved especially in light of the upcoming national elections in Iraq, due to be held in October 2021. The UN Mission will assist with the observation of voting as well as a summary report on the electoral process. Furthermore, UNAMI should continue to provide mediation between the Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government after the successful approval of the Federal Budget Law in the past month. Finally, the Mission will collaborate with national and local stakeholders to promote meaningful participation of women in politics and society, the safe return of IDPs to their ancenstral homes, and the delivery of humanitarian and medical aid in the face of Covid-19 challenges.
