Kurdistan Becomes Greener

The head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations, Minister Safeen Dizayee, was present at the United Nations Secretary-General’s Climate Action Summit together with a delegation from Iraq. The participation to this summit is a culmination of efforts and events that focus on making the Kurdistan Region more sustainable and more sensitive to Climate Action.

In the past months, leading figures in the Kurdistan Region have taken up the “Plant a Tree, Make a City Green” challange, including the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, the Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani, and the Head of DFR. Minister Dizayee also recited a poem by Kurdish author Faiq Bekas in his video.

Various initiatives were also carried out in light of environmental protection: The KRG has banned the use of plastic bags and is actively researching means to dispose of waste in a sustainable way through recycling. Moreover, a campaign to plant over 10,000 trees along the Erbil-Makhmour main road drew to a close on September 23. The trees have been planted on a 6 kilometer stretch of the road.

The Kurdistan Regional Government has instituted an Environmental Board. For more information, please visit their website: Board of Environment.
