Since August 2014 “Un Ponte Per” – an Italian partner organization of Caritas Austria – has opened five schools for refugees in the Kurdistan Region-Iraq. The schools focus specifically on the psychosocial support of traumatized refugee children: most of the pupils had to “witness killings, explosions and kidnappings first hand”, explains the director of the Al-Hekma-school, Sirak Abb Abbas. It is the aim of the school to counteract problems such as hyperactivity or aggressive behaviour through confidence-building measures and the creation of a sense of security.
